Fruit Borer in Maize

Common Causes

• Fall Armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) — invasive, whorl + cob damage
• Corn Earworm (Helicoverpa) — cob borer
• Stem borer (Chilo) — deadheart symptom at whorl

Treatment

Fall Armyworm: Emamectin 0.4g/L or Chlorantraniliprole 0.3mL/L in whorl. Corn Earworm: Spinosad 0.3mL/L at silk emergence.

Prevention

Scout for egg masses and early instar. Apply at whorl stage for best control. Pheromone traps.
