India has over 12 million hectares under micro-irrigation — but most drip systems are used only for water delivery, not for fertigation. Farmers who fertigate correctly report 30–60% higher yields with 20–30% less fertilizer use. This guide explains how to do it right.
Fertigation = fertigat(ion) — applying fertilizer dissolved in irrigation water through the drip system directly to the root zone. Benefits:
| Fertilizer | Drip Compatible | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| NPK Water Soluble (19:19:19, 13:00:45 etc) | ✅ Yes | 100% soluble, no residue |
| Calcium Nitrate | ✅ Yes | Must not mix with phosphates/sulphates |
| MAP 12:61:00 | ✅ Yes | Do not mix with Ca or Mg sources |
| Potassium Sulphate (SOP) | ✅ Yes | Good solubility |
| EDTA chelated micronutrients | ✅ Yes | Purpose-made for drip |
| Humic acid liquid | ✅ Yes | Also improves soil structure |
| Urea 46% | ⚠️ Caution | Increases soil pH temporarily, not ideal |
| DAP 18:46:00 | ❌ No | Low solubility, will clog emitters |
| MOP (Muriate of Potash) | ❌ No for quality crops | High Cl content damages fruit quality |
| SSP / Superphosphate | ❌ No | Insoluble, will block drip |
Creates vacuum using water pressure differential to suck fertilizer solution into the system. Simple, no electricity needed. Suitable for small holdings.
Fertilizer dissolved in a tank, water bypasses through it. Concentration decreases over time. Cheap and simple. Best for small farms.
Electrically driven pump injects precise amount of stock solution. Consistent concentration, can be automated. Best precision for commercial farms.
EC (Electrical Conductivity) tells you total dissolved salts — too high damages roots.
pH affects nutrient availability in the drip water itself:
| Combination | Result | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Calcium Nitrate + Phosphate (MAP) | Calcium phosphate precipitate — blocks drip | Never mix in same tank |
| Calcium Nitrate + Sulphate (SOP/MgSO₄) | Calcium sulphate (gypsum) precipitate | Never mix in same tank |
| Iron EDDHA + Calcium Nitrate | EDDHA complexes with calcium — reduced effectiveness | Apply separately, 2+ hours apart |
| NPK 19:19:19 + Calcium Nitrate | Minor precipitate possible | Jar test first, usually OK at low rates |
